With the cold temperatures we’ve been having of late, it’s hard not to reach for the heater or get the fire going. During the colder months though it’s important that everybody pays attention to the heating devices used in their homes and are made aware of any possible fire risks.
So to help make sure that the Everton Park community stays safe during these cooler months, I thought I’d share some tips on how to keep your home fire safe.
- Make sure that you have smoke alarms in your home and that they’re all in working order.
- Before using heaters (especially old ones) check that they’re still in good condition and free of dust.
- Don’t leave heating appliances on when you’re not around and be careful not to place them near any flammable materials, i.e. newspapers or magazines.
- If you have a chimney, it should be checked and swept out annually.
- It’s a good idea to make sure that you and your family have a home fire-escape plan in place. A fire-ready family is a fire-safe family, so educate yourself and be prepared in case of a fire at your home. A great place to find fire safety information is www.fire.qld.gov.au.
The above are just some fire safety tips that Everton Park residents should be aware of. It’s very important to educate yourself about fire risks though and avoid them wherever possible.
