This week it’s all about the Irish, as Everton Park residents celebrate the inaugural Brisbane Irish Festival.
The festival started last week with a St Patrick’s Day Parade through the city and it will continue until the end of this weekend, which shall be known as “Irish Weekend”.
There are a number of ways you might like to celebrate Brisbane’s Irish Week. A lot of Everton Park residents will probably be heading out on Saturday to celebrate St Patrick’s Day at a local pub or restaurant, where there is likely to be lots of Guinness, lots of green, and lots of Irish music and dancing.
As well as all of the St Patrick’s Day celebrations on Saturday, locals may also like to attend all of the events that will be taking place in Brisbane as part of the Irish Festival. You can find all the events by visiting the Queensland Irish Club website.
Brisbane has a strong Irish community, and chances are there are a lot of people with Irish ancestry living here, considering that there is estimated to be more than 70 million people in the world with Irish in their blood. Just a hundred years ago, 25 per cent of the Queensland population would have been Irish, with the rest split between English, Scotland and German settlers. Today our communities are much more diverse, but St Patrick’s Day and Brisbane Irish Festival events are for anyone who wants to get involved.
To all of those in Everton Park who decide to join in on the Irish celebrations this week, I hope you have a very merry and lucky day.
