This week (21st to 27th of May, 2012) is Spinal Health Week. Did you know that looking after your spine earlier on in life can save you years of torturous pain and debilitation in later years? Prevention is always better than cure, so as part of the Spinal Health Week and the Sit Right initiative, we thought we’d share some tips on maintaining a healthy spine for life.
According to the whatsyourposture.com.au website, sitting correctly at your place of work and maintaining a good level of physical activity such as walking regularly, are essential to the ongoing health of your spine.
For example, while seated at work your hips, elbows and knees should be at open angles (slightly more than 90 degrees), you should recline slightly to ease lower back pressure, your thighs should be parallel to the floor, your feet should be flat on floor (or on a footrest) and you should sit about one arms-length from the monitor (which should be positioned with the centre of screen at eye level and tilted upwards slightly).
You can find lots of helpful tips about caring for your spine by visiting whatsyourposture.com.au or visit the Spinal Health Week facebook page, where you can also enter their Sit Right Competition which runs until the 25th of May 2012.
Look after yourselves!
