Commonly known as Star Wars Day, May the 4th has become a day on which fans honour and celebrate the Star Wars films and culture. But this wasn’t always the case. There’s nothing in the films that dictates May the 4th should be recognised. Instead, this day of international recognition has come from nothing more than the similarity between “May the 4th be with you” and “May the force be with you”.
While we’re happy to open your eyes to the now internationally recognised Star Wars Day so that you can happily place your hair up in Princess Leia buns or simply kick back on the recliner to a Star Wars movie marathon, this common pun got our office sharing other misquoted phrases and song lyrics we’ve sung incorrectly…. often at the top of our lungs. Here are a list of some commonly mis-sung lyrics, and one or two from our own team:
Elton John’s “Hold me closer, tiny dancer” became “Hold me closer, Tony Danza”
Jimi Hendrix’s “Excuse me while I kiss the sky” became “Excuse me while I kiss this guy”
Adele’s “Should I just keep chasing pavements” became “Should I just keep chasing penguins”
Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “There’s a bad moon on the rise” became “There’s a bathroom on the right”
The Eagles’ “You’ve been out riding fences for so long now” became “You’ve been outright offensive for so long now”
Abba’s “Feel the beat of the tambourine” became “Feel the beat from the tangerine”
Adele’s “And I set fire to the rain” became “And I said thanks to the rain”
Okay, so some are a little silly (Tony Danza may be huggable, but what kind of a hobby is chasing penguins?), but they gave us a giggle which is all we ask on a Monday. Please share your own favourite mis-sung lyrics, or popular lines you’ve heard misquoted, and have a happy Star Wars Day.
