Moving can be a stressful time and so it’s easy to forget about some of the jobs that need doing before you move. One task that seems to be frequently forgotten, or done at the last minute, is organising the utilities for the new address.

So before you move into your new home, make sure that you find some spare time to get your utilities sorted out. It’s a good idea to do this at least a week before you move, because it can take a few days for some utilities to be processed and then switched on at your new address. I’ve heard horror stories before of people moving homes before arranging their utilities, only to find that they have to live without power for a couple of days!

There are a number of utilities that you may need to organise – such as electricity, internet, phone and gas. If you’re not sure which providers you want to use then start shopping around a few weeks before you move.

When arranging your new utilities, also keep in mind that you will need electricity on your moving day to help clean up, so don’t get the power switched off until you’ve completely left your old home.

If you would like a little bit of help arranging utilities and organising other moving services, then you can use the services of a company like Direct Connect, who can help take some of the hassle out of moving for you.

If you’re organised and get your utilities sorted out well before you move, then you will be able to relax and enjoy your new home when you do move in.
