Everton Park Students Encouraged to Choose Active School Travel

27 Jul 2012 Brian Brady 0 Comment

How does your child travel to school everyday? Do you drive them or do they walk or catch a bus?

The Brisbane City Council is currently trying to encourage local residents to think about how kids travel to school and to use alternative methods to driving such as walking, cycling, carpooling or using public transport.

There are a couple of benefits to using alternative methods to get to school. Firstly, walking and cycling is a great way to encourage kids to get active and to fit more incidental exercise into their day, and secondly because less cars on the roads means less traffic congestion around schools.

Walking to school may not be practical for everyone, but some parents might also consider driving part of the way to school and then walking the rest of the distance.

Those who want to help encourage their whole school to change its commuting behaviours can register to become part of the council’s Active School Travel Program.

Schools that are part of the council program will be given guidance and support to help them reduce school traffic.  Those who are interested in nominating their local school to become part of the Active School Travel Program should visit the Brisbane City Council website for full details.

We would love to hear how residents in Everton Park travel to their school – do you walk or catch the bus? Also do you think that our local schools have traffic congestion issues?
